Asthma is defined as the inflammation of your bronchial airways, which then causes a decrease in your airflow, an increase in mucus production and may sometimes cause cough. Asthma medications are important in controlling your asthma and asthma symptoms, so it is crucial to choose the right asthma medication that suits you personally. Your choice in asthma medication could mean the difference between being hindered by your asthma or living a full and active life. Medicines for asthma focus on controlling the inflammation and preventing the chronic symptoms of asthma like coughing and breathlessness. There are other asthma attack medicines that provide immediate relief during asthma attacks. There are two main types of medicines for asthma. The first are the anti-inflammatory drugs. This type is considered the most important because anti-inflammatory drugs have ongoing asthma attack prevention. Steroids, otherwise known as corticosteroids, are the more commonly used anti-inflammatory drug. These corticosteroids reduce the swelling and helps lessen the mucus production in the airways, thus helping to lessen the sensitivity to possible asthma triggers. The second type of asthma medication is the bronchodilators. Bronchodilators help relax the tightened muscle bands in the airways, which helps relieve asthma symptoms. As the muscles in the airways relax, the airways expand, letting in more air move in and out of the lungs. Most bronchodilators also loosen excess mucus from the lungs, which can then be cleared out once the person coughs, resulting to improved breathing. Both types of asthma attack medicines can be administered in several ways. If you have chosen the right asthma medication, you should be able to live a normal life. But if your symptoms persist, it is always advised to contact your physician and ask for advice about other asthma medicines that might suit you better.
There are many different kinds of natural asthma medicines. There are the long-term asthma control medicines. These medications are taken every day for long periods of time to control asthma that triggers symptoms at least twice a week and asthma attacks that may disrupt from your daily activity. The long-term asthma control medicines that are considered to be most effective are those that lessen or stop the inflammation of the airways. To further enhance the effects, anti-inflammatory drugs are often used along with long-term asthma control medicines. There are several long-term asthma control medicines like corticosteroid inhalants for the more persistent type of asthma, mast cell stabilizers which are also a form of anti inflammatory drug. There are also the long acting beta-antagonists, which are bronchodilators that are often used with anti-inflammatory drugs. You can also choose to use leukotriene modifiers instead of steroids or mast cell stabilizers. Aside from long-term asthma control medicines, there are also the quick-relief asthma medicines. These types of asthma medicines provide immediate relief for most asthma symptoms like coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. Under quick-relief asthma medicines there are the short acting beta-antagonists (which are bronchodilators that relieve attacks and prevent attacks that are caused by exertion), anticholinergic drugs (most of which are bronchodilators that are used together with or instead of short-acting beta-antagonists), and finally the systemic corticosteroids that are used during emergencies for quick control over the asthma attacks. You can also use inhalers, pills and nebulizers to combat your asthma attacks and asthma symptoms. Most inhalers are metered, giving you the exact prescribed dose that you need. There are also some that are already a combination of two asthma medications, so you’ll only have to use one device to deliver both medications. There is also a newer type of asthma medicine, for those that have multiple allergies, which can be injected under the skin for quicker relief. Theophylline is also a more commonly used bronchodilator and is used orally, taken either by pill or liquid form, or intravenously. Theophylline is taken daily and is mainly for those with asthma that is harder to control. Users of theophylline need to be cautious, as the medication causes several side effects like nausea, diarrhea and irregular heartbeats. If you suffer from any of these side effects, be sure to contact your physician, as it may be because of incorrect theophylline dosage. You may also find over the counter drugs, but these medicines for asthma may not be as effective as the ones mentioned above.
Always be sure to check your asthma medicine supply. Be sure to call your physician or local pharmacy if you are about to run out of your asthma medication. Always check the name and dosage of your asthma medicine before taking them. If you are using liquid forms of asthma medicines, be sure to check if the color of the medication has changed or if the liquid has become crystallized. If you are taking any other form of medication, inform your physician, so that adverse drug interactions can be prevented. Finally, if there are any untoward side effects report them to your doctor.
